Bodrum is one of Turkey’s most established and cosmopolitan coastal resorts. Originally a charming and fascinating fishermen’s town, but now has become more flamboyant and sophisticated over the years.

The town is a very popular tourist resort for Europeans and jet set Turks due to its attractive coastline and renowned night life (Bodrum has been referred to as the bedroom of Europe). It can safely be said that each year hundreds and thousands of tourists visit Bodrum. The population in Bodrum is around 32.000 and they earn their living by Fishing, Boat-Making, Agriculture, Weaving (the village Mumcular is famous for its carpets, kilims, and other weavings) and of course tourism which has become the most important industry in the past few years.

There is a large harbour and a fully equipped marina, with ferries to Kos (Greek Island). Besides the town of Bodrum, there is about 700 km2 called the Bodrum peninsula which has many charming towns on its own. Areas to purchase in Bodrum area are: Gumbet, Turgutreis, Gumusluk and Yalikavak be sure to keep an eye out for property in and around Gulluk as this is where Bodrum's first Golf course, the Vita Park Golf Course, will be situated.

The Bodrum peninsula has everything. It is an internationally known and established resort area with its own airport. With the eye on property you can say that the way most homes are constructed they offer great views of the surroundings and bay. This area is busy the whole year around because it has a large community of locals and foreigners living out there throughout the year. Rental potential in this area is to be called good due to the areas' accessibility, development of golf course and demand for long term rents by locals.

  WHERE TO VISIT

St Peters Castle
This is the most prominent feature of Bodrum. Whether entering the town by land or sea, one cannot help but be struck by the Castle's sturdy presence. The castle of St. Peter is one of the world's best preserved monuments from medieval times. The Castle's origins go back to the Knights of St. John, a group of expatriates who drew their ranks from Europe. This "Order of the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem" began in the Eleventh Century with a church and hospital set up for pilgrims in Jerusalem. The hospital operated under the strict code that care be denied to no one, although those who did not belong to the Catholic faith were confined to a separate ward.

The fortress became known as the Castle of St. Peter The Liberator because it served as the sole place of refuge for all Christians on the west coast of Asia Minor. The Knights kept a special breed of dog in the Castle, who could track down refugees and bring them to safety, much like the famous St. Bernard. One feature often overlooked is the careful selection of plant life flourishing in the inner garden. The collection represents nearly every plant and tree of the Mediterranean region, including many with mythological significance. Those who love history and culture will sure love the castle of St. Peter.

Diving
The waters around Bodrum have provided a source of food, transport and wealth for thousands of years. A generation ago sponge divers were common in Bodrum, and many locals can tell a tale or two about the risks that these hardy men took.

Along the harbour front is a statue of a diver that pays tribute to Bodrum's diving history.

Today divers from all over the world enjoy exploring the waters around Bodrum. There are a variety of dives only 30 minutes away, in sheltered seas and with visibility averaging 20 metres.

There are two main reefs off the coast with depths of between 6 and 32 metres. Black Island (Karada) is a large and undeveloped island opposite Bodrum that has 8 dive sites of note with names like 'Smugglers' and 'Bubble Cave'. This is the place to experience caverns, half-caves, tunnels, walls, and even a meteorite hole, giving plenty to keep the advanced diver happy. The island's anchorages are sheltered and easily accessible by boat. Grouper, moray eel, rays, barracuda, bream, octopus, plus a colourful variety of small fish inhabit the area.

The Antique Theater
Located on the southern slope of Mt. Goktepe just above the middle of Bodrum, this theater is one of the oldest in Anatolia. All ancient sites are within the area of the old walled city of ancient Halicarnassos. A Turkish team restored it in the 1960's and today the people of Bodrum still use the theater for festivals.

The theatre was a project by the ruler of Halicarnassus, Mausolus. Until his rule Halicarnassus was a fairly small city but he had a flair for ambitious projects and he recognized the area's natural advantages for fortification and commerce. Mausolus transferred his capital here from Mylasa (present-day 'Milas') and built long lines of big walls around Halicarnassus, parts of which still stand today. To populate the large new area he forced people of six other nearby cities to move. Mausolus taxed his subjects heavily to pay for these and other grand scale projects, and even imposed a fine on hair longer than shoulder length! The antique theatre is the only project of Mausolus that still stands.
