Didim is shaped as a peninsula surrounding Mugla on the east coast with huge inlet of Akbuk town,
Aegean sea on the west and east coast, Lake Bafa and the Menderes River on the northern coast.
The rapidly growing town of Didim is a beach resort not yet occupied by mass tourism.
It offers an excellent opportunity to experience local Turkish atmosphere and enjoy the renowned
Turkish hospitality. Didim is well known for it's historical sites (Didyma and Apollo temple)
and beautiful golden sand beaches. It is a relaxing holiday resort for those who enjoy fishing,
trekking, hunting, history, sea, sun and nature.
Didim has a coast of 53 km in total full of bays. Almost all the bays
have sandy beaches and allow people to sunbathe and swim freely. Among
these bays, the most important one is of course Altinkum (Golden
Sand), an excellent resort for those who seek sea, sun and aquatics. You
can have a sun bath on the golden sandy beaches, participate in aquatics
in the coves where any kinds of watersports can be performed.
Didim has the best of both worlds; sea and sun with endless golden beaches
on one side and historical and artistic wonders and stunning nature on
the other
It is located 123 km. from the centre of Aydin, 55 km. from Söke and
90 km.from Kusadasi and 100 km. to Bodrum at the south. It has a rich
history and is an important holiday place, the best among the Aegean coast.
A holiday spent in Altinkum Didim is a must to walk along it's golden
sands, to lie under it's brilliant sun and to visit the famous Temple
of Apollon found on the entrance of Didim built by the Anatolian God Apollon,
God of the Oracles.
Temple
of Apollon
The massive columns of the Apollo Temple were erected by people
who lived 7-8 centuries before Christ and who did not yet know how to
mix sand, pebbles and cement to make plaster. However they have been standing
for almost 3000 years. You are in the third greatest temple of the ancient
world. That temple is the architectural twin of the Artemision, which
is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Artemision cannot be seen anymore,
but the Apollo Temple still exists with all its majestisy. Besides, if
you are in Didim around the time there's a festival, you can even watch
a concert here in the evening. Didim is very adventageously positionned.
In fact, many settlements of the ancient world are close enough to visit
by daily trips
Priene
:
The ancient harbor city of Priene probably changed its location when the
silt of the Meander River threatened to bury it. Now it is nearly 16 km
/ 10 mi from the sea. The original place of the city has never been found
but it was probably a peninsula with two harbors. Priene was laid out
on a Hippodamian system of grid plan at the foot of a spectacular cliff
on Mount Mycale and contained many famous examples of Hellenistic art
and architecture. All the streets intersect at right angles. Remaining
small with about 4 or 5 thousand inhabitants and never of great political
significance it shared the same history as the other Ionian cities.
Miletus
the ancient city of Miletus (city of the philosophers) is known
as the first city to which the principles of modern town-planning were
applied. As a result of the silting caused by the alluvium washed down
by the Meander the city now lies at a distance of several kilometres from
the sea. The fact that Miletus formerly possessed four separate harbours
well indicates the important role The Meander played in the history of
the city. The Miletus alphabet was accepted as the normal script employed
in writing ancient Greek. The following are a few of the philosophical
views put forward by Milesian philosophers:
- "Beauty arises not from a beautiful body but from beautiful actions."
- "The skilful man is superior to the strong man."
- "A small spark is enough to burn down a whole forest."
